Reddit Sues Perplexity Over AI Data Scraping Allegations
Reddit has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Perplexity and three other companies in a New York federal court. The social media platform alleges these firms bypassed its data protections to harvest content for training AI systems—a claim Perplexity denies as "threats against openness."
The litigation reflects growing tension between content creators and AI developers. Publishers argue unauthorized use of copyrighted material erodes readership and advertising revenue, compounding pressure on traditional media business models.
This marks Reddit's second such action following its ongoing case against Anthropic. "AI companies are locked in an arms race for quality human content," said Reddit's chief legal officer Ben Lee, describing an alleged "industrial-scale data laundering economy."
